A Monster Calls

Following on from JK’s comments here, here are a few images taken from Patrick Ness’ new book ‘A Monster Calls’, illustrated by Jim Kay. Using a mixture of relief printing, black pen and ink, and various printed textures digitally pieced together, Jim has created a wonderfully dark atmosphere. I’d love to see the original works; I imagine the textures would really bring these images to life. There’s a lovely german trailer for the book, and you can see more of Jim’s illustration work.

Driss Ouadahi

Algerian artist Driss Ouadahi paints enormous public housing developments in his home country, used to accommodate displaced rural populations, embodying the politics of class, religion and ethnicity. Equally expansive and claustrophobic, I find his work mesmerising, so real yet so ‘other-worldly’. Tiled passageways and subway tunnels, built to enable the movement from one place to another, feel strangely labrynthine and prison-like. His work is full of wonderful conflict.

As a taster for the next Creative Forum, here’s a wonderful painting from Jim Kay, an illustrator based in Edinburgh. His site shows more of his drawings, paintings and sketches which, in my opinion are pretty stunning. The next forum, hosted by Jim will be taking place on Friday 27th November at 8.30am, follow the Creative Forum twitter to keep abreast of latest news.
