Olympus installation

Here at Linney, we have an installation space that we’ve used in the past to create interesting talking points, linked to the work we do for our clients. Recently, we put one together for Olympus based on their digital voice recorders. As well as a brief history of recording devices, from the Magnetophon to the Minidisc, we also wanted to show the capacity of digital as opposed to analogue recording. An Olympus DS-5000 can hold almost 80 hours of audio, the equivalent of 80 micro cassettes which we used to create this sculpture. For more information about the DS-5000 click here.
I’ve not seen much on the design blogs or twitter about the appearance of the 3 main election manifestos – yet this has been covered in some detail on national radio. Interesting to see the various approaches of the parties, the similarities and differences in layout and branding – and what effect the visual style has when reading/viewing the documents. I’m annoyed that I find myself warming to the Tories purely because they bothered to include some illustrations – and I don’t even know how to react to Labours animated/pdf combo! Check them out for yourself and let us know what you think! LABOUR / CONSERVATORY / LIBERAL DEMOCRATS also for those of a political persuasion don’t forget its the ultimate visual representation of the parties on ITV tonight at 8:30… more political based postings to come.
The new Nintendo DS 3D machine, available later this year. Proof that we are all now living in the future… this looks amazing.
Last month’s Pecha Kucha presentations are now online to view at your pleasure. To view them all click here.

Six Frame Movies

To coincide with it’s Kick-Ass edition, Little White Lies have just announced the winners of it’s latest creative brief competition – to transform a favourite film into a six panel comic strip. The winner was David Rigby, who cast an ironic eye over the nuances of the film Zombieland although I think that Total Recall by Matt Boyce and The Wicker Man by Hurk (excerpt shown above) are great. See all the winners here.

While browsing my local Mothercare store at the weekend I was pleased to see the car-seat safety icons I recently designed. The set comprised of 12 icons all of which featured in-store and will hopefully soon make their way into the next catalogue.

Pecha Kucha

On Friday 29th January, the Creative Forum became a Pecha Kucha event where five presenters from around the business talked about a (very) wide variety of subjects. Pecha Kucha is a new way of presenting, as an antidote to dull Powerpoint presentations. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.
After a brief intro, the presentations began, varying from the reality behind being in a touring band to a lesson on how nuclear weapons work (!) Once every presentation finished there was a period of time to discuss and ask questions and at the end of the entire Forum, we spoke about how it all went and where we could use it in the future. A big thanks to everyone who came and especially those who volunteered to present – we plan to post the presentations online soon so watch this space.
