Julian Bray exhibition at Rowsley, Chatsworth

We’re always happy to see Julian Bray dropping into our business as he continues to run drawing lessons with our designers on a regular basis… And now there’s a fantastic chance to view and purchase some of Julian’s own work…

I attended the Typo London conference last week. The event which hosted a wide range of speakers from Neville Brody to Lawrence Weiner, had the theme of ‘Places’ but to be honest was much broader than that. It was brilliantly facilitated by Erik Spiekermann and Adrian Shaughnessy (among others) and was easily the best conference I’ve been to in some time. One of the best things about it was that most of the speakers stayed for the duration and watched the other presentation, which created a real feel of community.

It’s the first time this event has been held in England, having previously been in Berlin and judging by the feedback from everyone, it looks like it’s going to return to the capital next year. I will be putting together a presentation covering all the amazing talks which will be shared here but for the time being here’s additional reading about it from Creative Review and Design Assembly.

Object Abuse

Max Lamb's bookends

Object Abuse is the latest exhibition at the KK Outlet in London, featuring work by leading designers and artists including Wilfrid Wood, Noma Bar and Hudson Powell. The project aims to take everyday objects and recycle them into something new (and useful), using little or no additional materials. These paintbrushes repurposed as coat hooks are particular favourites of mine:

Type Class

In an attempt to grow our collective understanding of (and more fully appreciate) the historical ages of typography we’ve installed a huge ‘floating’ type-cloud here in Linney Design, comprised of 12 characters from 12 different typefaces, each from one of the 12 eras of type. This is supported by the 12 A2 posters each showing the character in isolation, with its name, historical era and a mini-description. Alongside this there is also a little booklet going into more detail about the characteristics of each typeface and a brief overview of our need to understand and celebrate typography.

Typeface film

typeface

This looks interesting – a new film about a rural Midwestern museum and print shop where international artists meet retired type craftsmen. It has it’s UK Premiere at St Bride Library in London on 21 January – find out more here and see the (rather long) trailer on YouTube.

Beccy Ridsdel

br_big

English ceramist Beccy Ridsdel has worked as ceramics technician at York College for nearly 10 years and recently discovered her love of bone china and porcelain – I really like her latest work – an installation set up as an interrupted laboratory experiment – ceramics being dissected, like an autopsy, to find out what lays beneath the surface. Inspired by her mother, who is also a ceramist, Ridsdel is constantly exploring new forms and possibilities.
