Blippar app – a gimmick or the future of print advertising?
3 Comments | Posted by Gary Davison on 4 Jan 12 in Advertising, App, IT, Ideas, Linney, Media, Mobile, Print, User experience, Website
While an interesting take on augmented reality being used alongside ‘traditional’ print, will it really be that practical in everyday use?
Or if it takes off, is the consumer that bit closer to making the decision to buy?
See the links below for a real advertising campaign (Dominos Pizza) and other demonstrations using the Blippar app. Love the Aero bars!

EELS Project: Projection Mapping One Step Further

EELS 3D projection mapping multiplayer game from B-Reel & B-Reel Films on Vimeo.
The EELS project, created by Riccardo Giraldi at B-Reel Films in London, combines a dizzying array of technologies to take projection mapping an interactive step forward. It’s a multiplayer game experience where people can control their virtual EEL projected on a physical installation via an iPad App. It’s a quantum-leap forward from Nokia’s classic ‘Snake’, and I can see big possibilities, not just in the world of gaming, but for interaction, accessibility and communication on a much broader scale.

Typo 11 Places. Not really about type or places

I attended the Typo London conference last week. The event which hosted a wide range of speakers from Neville Brody to Lawrence Weiner, had the theme of ‘Places’ but to be honest was much broader than that. It was brilliantly facilitated by Erik Spiekermann and Adrian Shaughnessy (among others) and was easily the best conference I’ve been to in some time. One of the best things about it was that most of the speakers stayed for the duration and watched the other presentation, which created a real feel of community.
It’s the first time this event has been held in England, having previously been in Berlin and judging by the feedback from everyone, it looks like it’s going to return to the capital next year. I will be putting together a presentation covering all the amazing talks which will be shared here but for the time being here’s additional reading about it from Creative Review and Design Assembly.

BBC launches new homepage

The BBC has put up a new homepage (in Beta form) which is the first redesign since 2008. It seems to be very influenced by the iPlayer App and is another indication of websites taking inspiration from the way in which we use tablets.
We’re currently working on our own website redesign following similar principles (in that it works across a range of devices) which will be launched very soon. Regarding the BBC site, it feels a little underdeveloped and the colour coding, which worked well previously seems to have diminished leaving the hierarchy of information somewhat scattershot.
Check it out here. Any thoughts?
Stanley Chow is an award winning, Grammy nominated illustrator from Manchester, England… and this is his official app. StanChow App is your free VIP invite to interact in a virtual gallery of his favourite and most talked about illustration work. more info here…
There’s a small trend starting to happen where individual artists, illustrators, designers and photographers are offering a new way of interacting with their work – their very own App! I’m curious to know what you think of this idea, would you download an App of this sort (and actually use it?) – would you feel safe purchasing artwork through an App on your iPhone?
The first 2 of our Early Learning Centre iPhone/iPad apps have launched and are now available for free download from the iTunes store… Check out Manic Martians and Flashcards.
