Google break into the realm of TV commercials with this Superbowl 2010 spot – already parodied – it raises some interesting questions. First and foremost, do Google really need to advertise??? Much has already been said about it on Twitter / Blogs – what do you think?

Aaron Duffy of 1stAveMachine, directed the ad. Check out some of his other work for Google here:

He actually hand-crocheted the life-size web browser and those are his hands crocheting live in the ad… talented guy.

I agree Phil, in a sea of otherwise mediocre/offensive advertising, this displays the power of simple storytelling while remaining clever and cute. My initial reaction was a slightly cynical ‘eeeew’ slushy but it clearly displays the power of Google in a very human way, and I’m warming to it. Some people question why Google is advertising at all…I think the ad was in response to all the Bing ads that have been shown in America of late, which validates it somewhat. It also plainly demonstrates how privacy can be an issue with Google aggregating (and storing) your search history – revealing a lot about every single google user.

Yeah, agree with Phil – CHEEESE! But I like the pace and the storytelling idea…

Well, as if Google didn’t already have a huge audience, the Superbowl is really a time to capture the attention isn’t it?! I also love the pace and execution of this, the music is dreamy and very relaxing. I felt like I was coming under Google’s spell the whole way through. I don’t really buy into the “why are Google advertising at all?” school of thought – basically, why not? And if you are going to do it, might as well do it well. I think its also a very reassuring advert, in that you instantly feel part of the Google community, if that makes sense. We all already use Google every day, but seeing it in an advert like this for the Superbowl just kind of validates its importance.

I’m warmed by the fact that the most expensive advertising slot in the World featured an advert that you could make for virtually nothing.

This must be the European ad, as apparently the American version featured the question ‘where is france?’.
I thank you.

I think it was cute, it made me have a warm feeling after and there’s nothing wrong with that. I also think it’s very similar to an apple ad, not sure if that’s a bad thing or not?
Agree regarding the power of the story against the Ad as well it’s more and more prevalent now.
Like the comment about where is France to.

Although the idea is somewhat corny, I think the execution is absolutely wonderful. The sound design is beautifully done and the pace of it is perfect, especially the slight pause before the last search.
Maybe it’s the fact that it’s early on a Tuesday morning but at the end I almost welled-up. (It’s just text on a search engine for heaven’s sake!!!). Anyway, a great showcase for how communicators are realising the power of ‘the story’.
