I wrestled with the idea of posting this, as it’s perhaps just me giving in to my inner geek. But I’m curious as to what others more qualified to comment think of this new logo for next year’s revamped series – particularly the first-ever use of iconography. Any thoughts?

I’m always bemused as to why anyone would create a logotype/icon from letters when, phonetically, it simply doesn’t work. Reading ‘DW’ in isolation (dee-double-u) is one step removed from the ‘h’ phonetic that begins the word ‘who’ (hoo). Ultimately, over time, this won’t matter, as we’ll get used to the image of the icon representing Doctor Who… but in the short term, it’s lazy design.

Agreed. And not only do fans not refer to the show as DW, but the ‘abbreviation’ actually contains more syllables (dee dub ul yew) than the name in full (doc tor hoo).

yes, I agree. DW doesn’t relate to Doctor Who at all, they would have been better off using a question mark which would be much be in keeping with the character’s legacy.

Great piece on this over at Brand New – worth a read!
